Western chip supply chain strained by China reliance, says Techcet

A reliance on China for the raw materials used to produce specialty gases remains one of the biggest risks in the semiconductor supply chain, according to Lita Shon-Roy, President and CEO of Techcet.

Speaking during gasworld’s specialty gas webinar, she said Western chipmakers continue to depend heavily on Chinese-produced precursors and fluorocarbon gases at a time when governments are accelerating local chip manufacturing plans. 

With the market expected to rebound from 2026, she warned that the supply base may struggle to match demand.

“The chip industry [is] very dependent on China for raw materials,” said Shon-Roy. “Typically Europe, the UK to some degree, as well as the US, are highly dependent on raw materials and to some degree purified materials that then get down-packed and used by chip fabricators.”
