ECN, Citibim Unveil Mobile Solar Solution to Expand Clean Energy Access in Nigeria

The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has hosted a strategic meeting with Citibim Nigeria Ltd to review an innovative renewable energy project designed to provide clean, affordable electricity to underserved communities. The meeting, held at ECN’s headquarters, was led by Director-General Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi and Citibim CEO Dr. Abdul-Quayyum Gbadamosi.

The project, developed in collaboration with Sleekabyte Technologies UK Ltd and funded by Ze-Gen (Carbon Trust) through Innovate UK, features mobile solar generators and rentable energy capsules — a peer-to-peer micro-grid system that aims to revolutionize off-grid energy distribution in Nigeria.

Presented as a “Nigeria-first” initiative, the project prioritizes local assembly, job creation, and domestic component testing. It is also designed to support the country’s push for increased solar manufacturing and energy access at the grassroots level.

During the meeting, both parties discussed aligning the project with Nigeria’s Minimum Performance Standard (MPS) framework, ensuring thorough safety and efficiency testing. Citibim also requested ECN’s support in piloting the deployment, validating performance, and facilitating a nationwide rollout.

Dr. Abdullahi expressed strong support for the innovation, affirming ECN’s commitment to promoting locally driven clean energy solutions. He also granted Citibim access to ECN’s research and testing facilities.

Dr. Gbadamosi emphasized the solution’s scalability and practical application, noting its ability to provide power to schools, healthcare centers, small businesses, and rural households through pay-as-you-go energy capsules.

The partnership marks a significant step in Nigeria’s energy transition efforts, showcasing the potential of local innovation to address energy poverty while building sustainable, future-ready infrastructure.
