SM Supermalls has unveiled the country’s largest rooftop solar power installation on a commercial building, reinforcing its commitment to renewable energy and sustainable mall operations.

Located at SM City Fairview, the newly commissioned solar photovoltaic (PV) system boasts a capacity of 3.785 megawatts peak (MWp) and consists of 6,882 solar panels spanning 4.3 hectares. The system is projected to generate up to 5,960 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy annually—enough to power 44 escalators and all perimeter lights of the mall for over two years.

The solar installation is expected to reduce approximately 4,133 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, aligning with SM Prime Holdings’ target of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2040.

“This milestone shows how we’re scaling our commitment to sustainability across our properties,” said Hans T. Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime, emphasizing the company’s broader focus on energy, water, and waste sustainability.

The project was developed in partnership with renewable energy firm Buskowitz Energy. It surpasses SM City Santa Rosa’s 3.088 MWp capacity, making SM Fairview the new flagship for solar energy among SM malls. It also reflects the company’s sustained progress since its first solar installation at SM North EDSA in 2014, which began with a 1.5 MWp system.

SM Prime’s total solar capacity has now reached 73 MWp and is on track to expand to 100 MWp by the end of the year. The solar initiative is part of a wider strategy to improve operational efficiency, reduce dependence on the national grid, and enhance energy resilience during peak demand periods and outages.

In addition to renewable energy adoption, SM Prime incorporates potable water reuse systems, wastewater treatment, and solid waste management across its mall developments as part of its integrated green building strategy.
