SMA Altenso (Altenso) and Munich-based asset manager MEAG (MEAG) have signed an agreement to develop a second grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in Germany, further advancing the integration of renewables into the national grid. Following the successful Metelen project in North Rhine-Westphalia, Altenso will deliver a turnkey solution for a new large-scale battery park in Hoexter, also in North Rhine-Westphalia. The ready-to-build project, developed in-house by Altenso, will feature an output of 130 MW and a storage capacity of 354 MWh.

The Hoexter BESS sets new technological standards in Germany. It will be among the first large-scale projects in the country to utilize SMA Sunny Central Storage UP-S inverters, which incorporate state-of-the-art silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET technology. These next-generation inverters offer exceptional energy conversion efficiency, low acoustic emissions, and extended operational lifetime. The system is further optimized by two SMA Power Plant Managers, which act as central control units, enabling seamless grid integration and real-time monitoring for continuous operational oversight.

As the full-service technology partner, Altenso is responsible for the development, construction, and ongoing maintenance of the Hoexter BESS. Grid connection is scheduled for 2027.
“Battery energy storage systems are essential for bridging supply gaps during periods of low renewable generation and in facilitating the greater integration of renewable energy into the grid. With the projects in Hoexter and Metelen, we are laying the foundation for our battery storage platform in Europe.” said Dominik Damaschke, Head of Illiquid Assets Equity at MEAG.
