Hydrasun to assemble Nel PEM systems in Scotland

PEM electrolyser manufacturer Nel has agreed to work with Scottish fluid transfer, power, and control solutions specialists Hydrasun to develop dedicated assembly and integration capacity for its MC Series platform in Aberdeen.

Hydrasun is set to develop capacity at its Aberdeen facility to assemble and integrate Nel’s 1.25MW and 2.5MW modular configurations, excluding PEM stacks.

While the initial framework agreement does not give a timeline for when the Scottish operation will start production, Nel said the agreement could bring production capabilities “closer to key growth markets.”

The Scottish firm will manage the procurement, assembly and integration of the balance-of-plant systems surrounding Nel’s electrolyser stacks. Stack manufacture, however, will remain at Nel’s in Connecticut, US.

Hydrasun will receive £1.9m ($2.2m) from Scotland’s Just Transition Fund to upgrade its Aberdeen facilities and install new production lines for Nel’s MC Series. The investment will establish Scotland’s first clean technology manufacturing facility dedicated to electrolyser assembly and integration.

The move follows Nel Hydrasun a 2.5MW PEM system for a 300 tonne-per-year hydrogen hub developed by BP and Aberdeen City Council.

In July, Nel a boost in order intake, driven in part by renewed demand for its PEM systems.

The company secured NOK 230m ($23.6m) in new orders during the quarter, up 224% year-on-year and 171% from Q1 2026, with PEM electrolysers accounting for 96% of order intake.
