Gotion Secures 6 GWh Of Saudi Arabia’s First Utility-Scale BESS Tender

Gotion High-Tech has secured 6 GWh of battery energy storage capacity under Saudi Arabia’s first utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) procurement program, representing around 75% of the total capacity awarded in the first phase. The award was made by Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) as part of the Kingdom’s efforts to expand energy storage alongside renewable energy deployment.

The G1 project has a total capacity of 2 GW/8 GWh and an estimated value of $1.16 billion. Gotion has been selected for three sites: Al Muwayah, Haden, and Al Kahafa. Each site will have a capacity of 500 MW/2 GWh. The award makes Gotion the largest single technology supplier in the first phase of Saudi Arabia’s utility-scale storage program.

The projects will deploy Gotion Grid, marking the first international large-scale deployment of the company’s utility-scale energy storage system. According to Gotion, the system is designed for harsh desert conditions and can operate between -30°C and 55°C.

The company said its thermal management system is optimized for high-temperature and dusty environments, allowing the batteries to maintain output during sandstorms and reducing high-temperature degradation by 40% compared with conventional systems. The system has a stated design life of 25 years, compared with an industry average of 15–20 years.

Gotion Grid also incorporates an artificial intelligence-powered battery management system for intelligent dispatch, safety monitoring, and lifecycle diagnostics. The three projects will be remotely operated and connected to Saudi Arabia’s 380 kV transmission network.

The award strengthens Gotion’s presence in the Middle East and North Africa energy storage market. The company said its regional pipeline and projects total around 9 GWh, including a 1.5 GWh BESS project in Egypt and a 1.2 GWh project in Morocco with ACWA Power.

In Egypt, Gotion is also planning a 3 GWh local manufacturing facility. Globally, the company said its cumulative system-level energy storage projects have exceeded 10 GWh. Its international portfolio includes a 281 MW/843 MWh solar-plus-storage project in Australia, which is under construction and expected to achieve commercial operation in the first half of 2027.

Saudi Arabia has already started the next stage of its storage procurement program, with G2 underway. The G1 award is therefore expected to provide an important reference for future utility-scale BESS tenders as the Kingdom increases renewable energy capacity and strengthens grid flexibility.
