Brazilian oil and gas firm Petrobras and state-run science and technology funding organisation Finep have launched a R$150m ($29.1m) call for proposals, seeking companies to develop electrolyser technologies.
Petrobras, which requires proposed systems to comprise a minimum 50% Brazilian made components, aims to advance the country’s technology against global competition.
Saying that while a few domestic companies manufacture hydrogen equipment, the company said that none manufacture stacks, an electrolyser’s core component.
Brazil’s Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, said the scheme aims to strengthen Brazil’s technology chain, support industry, and reduce costs.
“We are…preparing the country for the challenges of the future,” she added.
The successful bidder will receive non-refundable monetary support, funded equally by Petrobras and Finep.
Petrobras also envisages investing $4bn in R&D by 2030.
It comes as Brazil develops a growing list of large-scale green hydrogen and derivative projects capitalising on renewable energy availability and strong trade route access to target export to consumptive markets such as Europe.
While the country hosts these projects, many are led by European players.
This month, Germany’s Thyssenkrupp Uhde was awarded for two planned 400,000 tonne-per-year green ammonia projects in Brazilian ports. In February, Denmark’s Topsoe was technology for a proposed sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blending component and renewable diesel facility in Brazil.
