Mexico has registered its first biomethane project, opening the door for renewable gas producers to certify the environmental attributes of their output and demonstrate its value to North American buyers.
The facility, operated by Brimex Energy in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, is the first Mexican renewable thermal energy project to be registered in the CleanCounts Registry (N-RETS).
The registration will allow buyers and auditors to verify the origin, volume and production period of the energy generated by the plant, providing greater traceability for its environmental attributes.
“Biomethane can solve several problems at once: it can make use of waste that is currently a liability, generate energy in Mexico, and offer an alternative for industries that need to reduce emissions but cannot electrify all their processes,” said Guillermo Gómez Herrera, President of the National Biogas Council.
Biomethane produced from waste could replace between 8% and 10% of Mexico’s natural gas consumption, according to data for the country.
The development comes a few months after Mexico’s Ministry of Energy (Sener) said it would create an for the country’s biomethane market.
The move aims to establish supply chain traceability and strict protocols for injecting biomethane into the gas grid.
Standards are urgently needed to enable biomethane to be injected into national distribution networks such as Sistrangas, according to Mexico Business News.
The framework is also expected to provide greater certainty for project developers, network operators and industrial consumers, helping support financing and commercial-scale waste-to-energy projects.
Mexico’s biomethane market faces two primary hurdles, including a lack of direct financial incentive mechanisms and the need for major infrastructure upgrades for waste segregation, collection logistics and grid connection networks.
Mexico published a Biofuels Law in October 2025, expanding the country’s framework to include biogas, biomethane and biojet fuel.
