South Cleanergy to Develop P13.8-B Solar-Storage Project in Negros

South Cleanergy, Inc., a subsidiary of Aboitiz Renewables, Inc., is set to develop a P13.846 billion solar farm with an integrated battery energy storage system (BESS) in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental. The Luna Solar Power Project, designed to generate 239.56 MWdc (171.11 MWac), aims to enhance energy reliability in the Visayas grid by ensuring a steady supply of renewable power.

The project, spanning 180 hectares in Barangay Luna, will incorporate a 306 MWh battery storage system to store excess solar energy produced during the day and release it when needed, particularly during nighttime and peak demand periods. This integration of solar and battery technology is expected to address intermittency issues and stabilize the grid.

South Cleanergy’s initiative aligns with Aboitiz Renewables’ goal of achieving a balanced energy portfolio, targeting a 50:50 mix of renewable and thermal energy by 2030. The company’s investment in solar-plus-storage solutions supports the country’s transition toward clean energy while ensuring grid stability.

According to documents submitted to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the project is expected to contribute to energy security by increasing the availability of clean power for households, businesses, and industries. The facility will also play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, in line with national efforts to promote sustainable energy solutions.

During construction, the project will require approximately 1,000 workers, while 50 full-time employees will be needed for maintenance and daily operations once it becomes operational. The electricity demand during the construction phase is estimated at 1,645 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per day, increasing to 2,900 kWh per day upon full operation, both to be supplied by the Northern Negros Electric Cooperative (NONECO).

Construction is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2026, with commercial operations targeted for the fourth quarter of 2027. The Luna Solar Power Project is anticipated to serve as a benchmark for future renewable energy developments in the Philippines, demonstrating the role of advanced energy storage in enhancing grid reliability.

As demand for clean and stable energy solutions grows, the integration of battery storage in solar projects is seen as a key strategy for improving energy resilience. The success of the Luna Solar Power Project could encourage further investments in renewable energy infrastructure across the country.
