Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, has commenced construction of an 800 MW renewable energy project in Andhra Pradesh, marking a major step in expanding clean energy infrastructure and supporting India’s renewable energy transition.
The project comprises 400 MW of wind power at Kanekallu in Ananthapuram district and 400 MW of solar power at Pattikonda in Kurnool district. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by senior leaders from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Tata Power and Suzlon.
Under the project, TPREL will develop the wind asset, while Suzlon will execute the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) scope for the 400 MW wind project. The remaining 400 MW capacity will be developed by TPREL for NTPC, including a 200 MW Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) project integrated with a 25 MW/50 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The balance 200 MW solar capacity remains available for future allocation.
The company said the project has secured 800 MW of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) connectivity through the Ananthapuram II and Kurnool-4 CTUIL substations, enabling efficient evacuation of renewable power through the national transmission network.
The project is being implemented under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy (ICE) Policy, which aims to accelerate renewable energy investments, expand clean energy capacity and promote sustainable industrial growth across the state.
Spanning 3,462 acres, including 2,700 acres for solar installations and 760 acres for wind development, the project is expected to generate annual lease income for landowners and create approximately 4,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities during construction and operation.
Speaking at the event, Andhra Pradesh Minister Nara Lokesh said the project reflects growing investor confidence in the state’s clean energy policies and will contribute to sustainable industrial development and India’s energy transition.
Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Power, said the integrated wind and solar project will support the delivery of reliable renewable energy while advancing the company’s commitment to India’s clean energy goals.
Suzlon Co-founder Girish Tanti said the project strengthens the company’s long-standing partnership with Tata Power Renewables and takes their combined renewable energy portfolio beyond 1 GW, while supporting Andhra Pradesh’s renewable energy ambitions.
The project further strengthens TPREL’s renewable energy portfolio, which currently stands at 17.7 GW, including 9.8 GW under construction, and supports Tata Power’s long-term objective of achieving 100% clean energy by 2045.
