TRANSCO, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), has announced the successful completion of four major projects aimed at supporting the UAE’s transition to a more sustainable energy future.

The company has activated two of the largest phase-shifting transformers in Abu Dhabi and commissioned the UAE’s largest dynamic reactive power system, along with a utility-scale reactive power system in Al Ain.

Dr. Afif Al Yafei, CEO of TRANSCO, highlighted the significance of these projects, stating, “These initiatives will ensure that the network is resilient and capable of handling the changing energy mix from low-carbon sources, such as solar and nuclear.”

The two new phase-shifting transformers, which were commissioned in May and August 2024, are designed to control the flow of power within the grid. By improving flow control capabilities, these transformers help balance energy distribution, reduce power loss, and enhance overall grid management. They also play a crucial role in enabling the seamless integration of renewable energy sources into the national grid.

In a UAE-first, TRANSCO also commissioned the country’s largest dynamic reactive power system, known as a STATCOM, in the Zakher area of Al Ain in September 2024.

These advancements are part of a broader initiative to deploy 29 reactive power systems across the Abu Dhabi grid in the coming years, further bolstering the grid’s capacity to handle a diverse and low-carbon energy mix.
