Dutch battery energy storage company Ampowr has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indonesia’s Ministry of Villages and Development of Disadvantaged Regions (Kemendes PDT) to improve electricity access in rural parts of the country. The agreement was signed in Jakarta by Kemendes PDT Secretary General Taufik Madjid and Ampowr Co-CEO Eric van Honk. The partnership aims to bring clean and reliable electricity to villages that still have little or no access to power.

Indonesia has more than 75,000 villages, and many continue to face electricity shortages. While some villages do not have electricity at all, others receive power for only a few hours each day, in some cases as little as eight hours. The new partnership is expected to help reduce this gap by introducing renewable energy solutions supported by battery storage.

The project will begin with a pilot phase covering four villages. During this stage, Ampowr will install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and its energy management software to demonstrate how the technology can provide reliable electricity. If the pilot project is successful, the program will be expanded to around 300 villages before moving towards a larger national rollout aimed at supplying electricity to all unelectrified villages in Indonesia.

Ampowr will use its proprietary energy management platform, Cosmos, to coordinate the operation of solar panels, battery storage, and backup power systems. The software is designed to ensure a stable electricity supply throughout the day and reduce the risk of power interruptions. Under the agreement, the company will manage the complete system, including hardware integration, software operation, and long-term maintenance. This approach follows the business model that Ampowr already uses in the Netherlands.

The company believes that reliable electricity is essential for improving the quality of life in rural communities. Stable power can help health centres safely store medicines and vaccines, allow schools to continue activities after sunset, and support farmers by improving post-harvest processing and storage. The project also includes training and capacity-building programs so local residents can eventually manage and maintain the systems themselves, creating long-term opportunities for local businesses.

The signing ceremony was attended by Marc Gerritsen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and ASEAN. Before construction begins, Ampowr and the Indonesian ministry will carry out a detailed feasibility study for the four pilot villages.
