End users ‘unhappy’ with inflexible helium market, claims Pulsar CEO

Helium end users are “unhappy” with the current market model amid ongoing strains in supply and demand, according to Pulsar Helium CEO Thomas Abraham-James.

Speaking exclusively to gasworld, Abraham-James said, “I know first hand they haven’t been happy with it forever, quite frankly. At the moment, 95% of helium is produced as a byproduct, there’s no flexibility. So it comes out at [the] rate they produce natural gas. For the end user who wants more, they can’t get additional [supplies] and if they don’t want it, if they’re scaling back, they still have to pay for it under long-term ‘take or pay’ contracts.”

A geologist by background, Abraham-Jones reflected on the challenges in the market during his 12 years in the helium industry.
