PtX Development and KGAL have acquired a majority stake in Lhyfe’s planned 800MW green hydrogen project at the large-scale multi-developer hub in Lubmin, Germany.
Lhyfe’s is one of four major green hydrogen projects planned at the former nuclear power plant site in Lubmin, and was unveiled in 2023. The French hydrogen producer had expected to begin commissioning the plant in 2029.
Since unveiling plans for the project, Lhyfe has not announced any development updates.
PtX and KGAL said the unvalued ownership deal included 10 hectares surrounding the site, which could support the project’s expansion to 1.7GW and 160,000 tonnes-per-year.
System provider GP Joule is set to act as the site’s project developer. However, a development timeline remains unspecified.
It comes after KGAL said it would invest in PtX’s project
Dr Alan Cadmus, Managing Partner of PtX, said that expanding the project lays the foundations for long-term green hydrogen supply to decarbonise German industry.
“[It] provides us with the development depth necessary and strengthens the entire site as a future hub for the German hydrogen economy,” he added.
With around 4GW of planned hydrogen production capacity in Lubmin, PtX said the area was evolving into “Germany’s largest hydrogen hub.”
Hydrogen produced in Lubmin is expected to feed into Germany’s to supply industrial regions. A of the network running from Lubmin to Saxony-Anhalt has already been completed.
Other projects in Lubmin include project that was acquired from insolvent developer HH2E. Danish investor Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners later acquired a 70% in the first of the H2Apex project.
