Germany-based EnviTec Biogas has finalised its second biomethane project in Slovakia at an existing biogas plant owned by agricultural company Cita Via.
According to Stefan Laumann, Head of Gas Upgrading at EnviTec, the customer is upgrading 750 normal cubic metres per hour of biogas to biomethane with the plant.
The biogas plant has been in operation for 14 years and is operated with maize and animal manure. With the addition of the new gas upgrading unit, the plant will continue to generate electricity.
“In the long term, however, we will switch to using waste materials only, allowing us to support the green energy transition in Slovakia even more effectively,” said Ing. Viktor Hegedus, Managing Director of Cita Via.
EnviTec launched its in the country last June, when it installed gas upgrading technology together with a raw gas treatment system at an existing biogas plant.
According to the target market analysis conducted by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Slovakia plans to invest heavily in the expansion of renewable energies.
A total of €103m ($121.5m) in funding from the EU Recovery Fund has been made available for the construction of new renewable energy plants.
The analysis shows that 34 biogas plants in the country have the potential to produce biomethane. This transition can help meet around 10% of the country’s annual gas demand.
The Slovak government has allocated over €26m ($30.6m) from the EU Recovery Fund to modernise existing biogas plants for upgrading to biomethane. The country has also introduced the Slovak Biomethane Register for tracking and certifying sustainable production.
